Trip to Your Heart, Chapter Two

When Lily got home, she rushed to her parents, who are both movie makers. “How was school today, honey?“ Mrs. Miyazaki asked. “Great! I made three new friends!” ”That’s great, sport!“ Mr. Miyazaki said cheerfully. “How was your day?”  Lily asked. “Good.“ Mr. Miyazaki replied. “I got a little more done on the movie I’m making, ‘Life on the Hilltops.’“ Lily nodded. “I’d better get going on my homework.“ Lily headed to her room. She zipped open her backpack and pulled out the math worksheet Mrs. Slavens had given her. She took the sharpest pencil from her pencil holder and started writing down the answers to the math equations. 72, 39, 42, 12 remainder one… as Lily wrote, she thought about Violet and Sundew and Skye. As she was thinking, she remembered that the poster she almost bumped into said that each team should have at least five kids. But there were only four of them. She wondered what would happen if the fifth person didn’t show up. Lily decided not to worry about that. Instead, she wondered why they were just having fun and not practicing. Probably because the fifth person wasn’t there. Arrrgh, this was not helping take her mind off the fifth person.

She started to wonder what the fifth person’s name was, but then stopped herself. She thought about what would help her take her mind off the fifth person. She looked around the room. Then she spotted a coloring book. Coloring! Of course, she thought. She walked over to the coloring book and located her color pencils.

She then picked up the coloring book and flipped open to the first page. It was a picture of a bee hovering over a flower. She found a yellow color pencil and started coloring the bee’s stripes. She was finishing the picture when she noticed the time: 9:30 p.m. She gasped. She’d been coloring for an hour! She immediately abandoned her coloring book and color pencils and rushed over to the math worksheet that she had left on her desk. She grabbed her pencil and started writing down math question answers as fast as she could. 50, 42, 11, 103, 5037, 100, seven, 44, 2 yards, 2 feet, and 989 g.  Whew. Lily wiped the sweat off of her forehead and glanced at the clock: 10:00 PM.

Suddenly, Mrs. Miyazaki came into the room. “Time to go to bed, sweetheart. “She said. “OK, mom,“ Lily replied. She changed into her pajamas and climbed into her bed. “Sweet dreams, Lily,“ Mrs. Miyazaki said softly. “Good night, mom,” Lily said. “Good night,“ her mom replied. She walked out of the doorway and close the door behind her. Lily closed her eyes and fell asleep.
